What is Belschnickel?
I also created their logo, a caricature of their namesake, Belschnickel - one of Germany’s lesser known Weihnachtsmänner. He is the slightly sinister fur-clad Santa Claus of the forested areas of Baden-Wüttemberg in south-western Germany who carries presents but also a whip and cluster of branches. The tradition was transported to the US with early immigrants in particular to Pennsylvania. He made his fame outside of Germany by his portrayal in the US Office series by Dwight Schrute in the episode “Dwight Christmas”.
